Sega has unveiled the first proper trailer for new Sonic the Hedgehog game Sonic Frontiers, as well as the new Sonic 2 movie.
When Sonic first debuted on the Mega Drive, over 30 years ago, one of its main selling points was that it was nothing like Super Mario and other Nintendo games. Times have changed though and while the Sonic games still don’t look or play much like Mario, new title Sonic Frontiers does seem to have taken influence from another famous Nintendo franchise.
That was exactly what earlier rumours had suggested though, since it’s been known for a while now that the new game, previously known as Sonic Rangers, would be an open world title.
The new trailer shown during The Game Awards doesn’t feature any actual gameplay but it does offer a good look at the game world and, yeah… it looks very much like Zelda.
If you’re going to borrow you might as well borrow from the best, and it seems pretty certain that despite what it looks like the game won’t play anything like Zelda.
Instead, the reason for having such a large game world is simply that Sonic goes so fast he needs plenty of room (he’d get from one end of Halo Infinite’s map to the other in seconds).
Sega has confirmed that Frontiers is being developed by Sonic Team in Japan, with producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto in charge.
That’s not terribly encouraging though, because Kishimoto was also the director on the woeful Sonic Forces (Kawamura was one of the lead artists) and at this point it seems pretty clear that Sonic Team do not know how to make a good 3D Sonic game… but hey, there’s a first time for everyone.

As with many of the other Game Awards reveals the only concrete information comes from the YouTube description of the trailer, which offer the following extra details:
‘An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high velocity, open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands – landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more!’

Given the lingering doubts about Sonic Team, it was much easier to be positive about the other Sonic related revelation from The Game Awards, namely the trailer for the movie sequel.
As was obvious from the poster, this seems to be a surprisingly faithful adaptation of Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive, with the major difference that most of the action seems to take place on Earth.
Jim Carrey has a proper Dr Robotnik moustache now though, plus robot badniks minions, chaos emeralds, and Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba) as an unwitting ally.
The film will be out on April 8 in the UK, while Sonic Frontiers will be released in time for Christmas 2022.
